Steam login failures can be caused by the wrong password, Steam Guard code trouble, stale saved login data, temporary lockouts, or Steam-side service problems.
These steps apply to the Steam client on Windows, macOS, Linux, and the Steam mobile app.

Use this if Steam spins at sign-in, rejects credentials, asks for a Steam Guard code that never arrives, or will not let you into the account.
Confirm your password and Steam Guard code
Most login issues start with credentials or two-factor verification.
- Make sure you are entering your Steam password, not your email password.
- If unsure, choose Forgot your Steam Account name or password on the login screen.
- Use the reset link sent to your account email.
- If Steam Guard uses the mobile app, open the Steam Mobile app and use the current code.
- Remember that mobile authenticator codes refresh about every 30 seconds.
- If using email Steam Guard, check spam and junk folders.
- Wait a few minutes before requesting another code if the first one is delayed.
Too many wrong attempts can temporarily slow or lock login. If you have tried repeatedly, wait about 30 minutes before trying again.
Clear Steam’s login cache
If the password and code are correct but the client still refuses them, clear saved login data.
- Exit Steam fully from the system tray or menu bar.
- Reopen Steam and use Change User or Logout if you can reach that screen.
- If Steam is stuck, open the Steam install folder.
- Delete configloginusers.vdf.
- Restart Steam.
- Sign in fresh with your username, password, and Steam Guard code.
Deleting loginusers.vdf removes saved sign-in data only. It does not remove installed games.
Test browser sign-in and recovery
Try signing in through the Steam Community website in a browser. If the browser also fails, the issue is account or Steam service related rather than your local client.
If you no longer have the authenticator, email, or phone tied to the account, use Steam Support’s Help, I Can’t Sign In flow. Account recovery can take time, so start it early.
The Steam Mobile Authenticator is usually more reliable than email codes because it does not depend on email delivery delays.
During large Steam sales or outages, login problems can affect many users at once. If other people are reporting the same issue, wait and retry before doing deep local changes.
