
A dynamic IP is assigned automatically and can change. A static IP stays fixed until someone changes it. Most home devices should use dynamic addressing unless a specific service needs a stable address.

Use this if you are deciding whether a printer, NAS, camera, server, or your whole home internet connection needs a fixed IP address.
Check which type a device uses
Most devices are automatic unless someone changed them.
- Windows: open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi or Ethernet, choose the connection, and check IP assignment. DHCP means dynamic; Manual means static.
- Mac: open System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details > TCP/IP. Configure IPv4 shows Using DHCP or Manually.
- Router: open LAN or DHCP settings. If DHCP Server is on, the router assigns dynamic addresses unless a device has a reservation.
- Public IP: ask your ISP or check plan details. Most residential public IP addresses are dynamic unless you pay for static service.
When a fixed local IP helps
Use a stable local address for things other devices reach directly.
- Printers installed by IP address.
- NAS drives and file servers.
- Security cameras and NVRs.
- Home servers or game servers.
- Devices with port forwarding rules.
More control
Use DHCP reservation first
Most people who say static IP really need a DHCP reservation. The router still assigns the address, but it always gives that device the same one, avoiding manual gateway and subnet mistakes.
Public static IP is a separate thing
A public static IP belongs to the whole internet connection and is visible from outside. It matters for hosting, business VPNs, and remote access without Dynamic DNS, and is usually a paid ISP add-on.
Manual static settings can break connection
If you enter the wrong gateway, subnet mask, DNS server, or duplicate address, the device can lose network access. DHCP avoids that risk.
