How to Set Up a Work Profile on Android

Setting up Android work profile illustration

An Android work profile creates a separate managed area for company apps and data on a personal phone. Your employer can manage the work side while your personal apps, photos, messages, and files stay separate.

These steps apply to Android Enterprise bring-your-own-device work profiles. Setup usually requires an invitation, QR code, activation link, or instructions from your employer.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if your employer asked you to install work apps, company email, or device policy on your personal Android phone and you want to know what changes.

Set Up the Work Profile

  1. Connect to stable Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Settings > Passwords and accounts, or Samsung Accounts and backup > Accounts.
  3. Tap Add account.
  4. Choose Work, Set up work profile, or follow the Android Device Policy app path from your employer.
  5. Scan the QR code or open the setup link from IT.
  6. Sign in with work credentials.
  7. Read the management notice explaining what IT can control.
  8. Accept and wait while required work apps install.

When setup finishes, work apps usually appear with a small briefcase badge and may be grouped in a Work tab or section.

Use and Manage the Work Profile

  • Work apps and notifications are labeled separately from personal apps.
  • You can adjust notification settings for work apps without changing personal versions.
  • Many phones include a Work profile toggle to pause all work apps and notifications after hours.
  • Removing the work profile deletes company apps and work data but leaves personal apps and files alone.
  • Your employer can often remove or wipe the work profile remotely if the phone is lost or you leave the company.

Privacy and Setup Notes

What IT Can Usually See

IT can generally manage work apps, enforce passcodes, require encryption, and wipe work data. They typically cannot see personal photos, personal browsing outside work apps, or personal app usage through the work profile itself.

Setup Codes Can Expire

If provisioning fails, restart, use stable Wi-Fi, and ask IT for a fresh QR code or link. Enrollment links often expire.

Only One Work Profile

Android supports one work profile per device. Remove the old work profile before setting up a new employer profile.
