An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you download a carrier profile with a QR code, activation code, or carrier app.
These steps apply to eSIM-capable Android phones such as recent Pixel and Galaxy models on carriers that support eSIM activation.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your carrier gave you an eSIM instead of a physical SIM, or if you want to add a second line for work, travel, or another carrier.
Activate with a QR Code
- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi.
- On Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and tap Add eSIM or download a SIM.
- On Samsung, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM.
- Choose the option to scan a QR code from your carrier.
- Scan the code from paper, email, or the carrier app.
- Confirm the download and wait for activation.
- Label the line so you can identify it later.
Activation needs internet before the eSIM works, so use Wi-Fi during setup.
Activate Through the Carrier App
- Install the official carrier app from the Play Store.
- Sign in to the carrier account.
- Look for options such as Activate eSIM, Add a line, or Manage SIM.
- Follow the prompts to verify the phone and download the eSIM profile.
- After completion, check SIM settings to confirm the eSIM is listed and enabled.
Manage Multiple Lines
If you use an eSIM with another SIM, open SIM settings and choose which line handles calls, texts, and mobile data. You can often split them, such as calls on one line and data on another.
eSIM Notes
Support Depends on Model and Carrier
Some versions of a phone support eSIM while other regional or carrier-locked versions do not. Check specs or SIM status if the option is missing.
Transfers Are Not Physical
You cannot move an eSIM like a card. Use the carrier app, website, or a new activation code when moving to another phone.
Keep Activation Details
Save carrier instructions until the line is active and tested. You may need the code again if setup fails.
