Schlage smart locks are battery-powered, so most problems come from batteries, app or hub connection, or the deadbolt binding against the door frame.
These steps apply to Schlage Encode, Encode Plus, Sense, and Connect smart locks, including Z-Wave or Zigbee hub setups.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the keypad rejects valid codes, the app cannot control the lock, the deadbolt will not move, or the lock seems unresponsive.
Replace the batteries
- Check battery level in the Schlage app if available.
- Listen for low-battery keypad warnings.
- Remove the interior lock cover.
- Pull out the battery pack.
- Replace all four AA batteries with a fresh matching set.
- Do not mix old and new batteries.
- Reinstall the battery pack and cover.
- Test the keypad and app.
Low batteries can cause several unrelated-looking symptoms before the lock fully dies. Exterior doors in cold climates may drain alkaline batteries faster; lithium AA batteries can perform better in cold weather if the model allows them.
Reconnect the app or hub
- For Encode and Encode Plus, use the Schlage Home app and reconnect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi if it shows offline.
- For Schlage Connect with Z-Wave or Zigbee, remove and re-add the lock in the hub app, such as SmartThings or Ring Alarm.
- For Schlage Sense with Apple Home, check that the Apple TV or HomePod home hub is online and within Bluetooth range.
- If the keypad works but remote control does not, the lock hardware is likely fine and the issue is network, hub, or app pairing.
Check for mechanical binding
If the lock accepts a code and the motor tries but the deadbolt does not move, check door alignment.
- Open the door.
- Turn the deadbolt manually from the inside.
- Close the door and try again.
- If it moves smoothly open but binds closed, inspect the strike plate.
- Tighten loose hinges.
- Loosen and adjust the strike plate if the bolt catches.
- File the strike opening slightly only for small edge contact.
- Call a locksmith or carpenter for warped doors or major misalignment.
Forcing a misaligned deadbolt can wear out the lock motor. Factory reset deletes user codes and pairings, so use it only after battery, connection, and alignment checks. If those checks all pass, contact Schlage support with model and purchase details.
