Roomba Wi-Fi setup often fails because of network band, password, signal, or router security changes. Older Roombas are 2.4 GHz-only, while newer models may support dual-band Wi-Fi.
These steps apply to Wi-Fi-connected Roomba models, including many 600 series and newer models using the iRobot Home app.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the iRobot Home app cannot find the Roomba, setup times out, or a robot that used to work went offline after a router change.
Confirm Wi-Fi band and password
- Open your router app or admin page.
- Check whether 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz have separate names.
- If the network is combined, temporarily split bands during setup.
- Open the iRobot Home app.
- Start adding or reconnecting the Roomba.
- Choose the 2.4 GHz network, especially for older 600 or e series models.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password exactly.
- Keep the Roomba within a few feet of the router during setup.
2.4 GHz is also better for a robot vacuum because it roams through the whole home and needs range more than speed.
Reset saved Wi-Fi on a Roomba that used to work
Button combinations vary by model, so check your manual before a full reset.
- On many i, e, and 900 series models, holding CLEAN for about 10 to 20 seconds clears network settings.
- On several s9, j7, and newer models, holding Clean, Spot, and Home or Dock together for about 10 seconds clears Wi-Fi.
- Wait for the tone or flashing light ring.
- Reconnect through the iRobot Home app with the current network name and password.
This network reset should not erase maps or cleaning history on most models, unlike a full factory reset.
Router and dock checks
If the new router uses WPA3-only security, switch to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode if available. Older Roomba Wi-Fi chips may not support WPA3-only networks.
Signal at the charging dock matters because the Roomba syncs there often. Move the dock or add a mesh point if it sits in a basement or far corner.
Check Settings > About in the iRobot Home app for firmware updates. Use a full factory reset only after simpler Wi-Fi resets fail because it can erase maps, history, and settings.
