A few Samsung codes account for many real-world cases. Some clear after a reset. Others point to blocked fans, frozen evaporator areas, or temperature sensors that need diagnosis.
Match your code to what it means
- 22 C, 22 E, or 22 Er: often an evaporator fan error, frequently caused by ice around the fan after a door was left open.
- 1E or 5E: commonly points to a fridge or freezer temperature sensor reading outside normal range.
- OF or dF: often demo/showroom mode or a defrost display condition rather than a cooling failure.
- Er FF or Er rF: freezer or refrigerator fan blocked or failed, often from ice buildup.
- PC ER: a power or control communication error, often after a surge or outage.
Reset the refrigerator
- Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker.
- Wait five full minutes.
- Restore power and watch the display.
- If the code clears and cooling returns, continue monitoring.
- If the code returns immediately, treat it as a real fault, not a one-time glitch.
Do not ignore fan codes because poor airflow can let food temperatures drift. Do not remove evaporator panels or sealed-system parts unless trained. If there is a chemical odor with an error code, unplug the refrigerator if safe and call a technician.
Turn off demo mode if you see OF or dF
- Find Power Cool and Power Freeze, or the matching buttons listed for your model.
- Hold both for about five to eight seconds until the display changes or chimes.
- Confirm normal temperatures display again.
- Give the refrigerator several hours to cool if demo mode had disabled cooling.
Fan codes often come from ice physically blocking the fan. A full unplugged defrost with doors open for 24 hours may clear ice, but if a defrost heater or sensor has failed, the ice will return.
Sensor codes may involve inexpensive parts, but they are usually behind interior panels. If a code returns after reset, have a technician confirm the exact failed part before ordering replacements.
