Samsung DeX turns a supported Galaxy phone into a desktop-style workspace with resizable windows, a taskbar, drag-and-drop, and mouse support. You can run it on a monitor, TV, laptop display, or in some cases on the phone screen itself.
These steps apply to Samsung Galaxy S, Note, Fold, and selected other Galaxy models that support DeX. Check your model specs if the DeX tile is missing.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if you want to use your phone like a lightweight desktop for email, documents, web browsing, photos, or multitasking on a larger screen.
Start DeX with USB-C to HDMI
- Use a USB-C to HDMI cable or hub that supports video output, also called DisplayPort Alt Mode.
- Plug USB-C into the phone and HDMI into the monitor or TV.
- Switch the display to the correct HDMI input.
- Tap Start on the phone prompt.
- Use the phone as a trackpad, or connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
To leave DeX, open the notification shade and choose Exit DeX, or unplug the cable.
Use Wireless DeX on a TV or Monitor
- Put the phone and TV on the same Wi-Fi network if possible.
- Make sure the TV supports Smart View, Miracast, or compatible wireless display behavior.
- Swipe down twice and tap the DeX tile.
- Choose DeX on TV or monitor, Wireless DeX, or the matching option.
- Select the TV and confirm any code or prompt.
Use DeX on the Phone Screen
- Swipe down twice to open Quick Settings.
- Tap DeX. Add the tile with Edit if needed.
- Choose DeX on this screen if your model offers it.
Phone-screen DeX is cramped, but it can help with quick windowed multitasking such as copying between apps or checking a spreadsheet beside a message.
DeX Notes
Apps Behave Differently
Samsung, Google, Microsoft Office, browser, mail, notes, and gallery apps usually work well. Some games and video apps may force full screen or refuse DeX windowing.
The Phone Still Works
When DeX is on an external display, the phone can act as a trackpad or run a different app while the DeX desktop continues.
Accessories Improve It
A USB-C hub can connect HDMI, wired keyboard, mouse, and external storage at the same time if the hub supports those devices.
