When Safari will not load pages, the cause is usually the connection, stored browser data, or a restriction setting. A blank page, endless spinner, or cannot-connect message usually clears after checking the network and Safari data.
These steps apply to iPhones running recent iOS versions on Wi-Fi or cellular data.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if Safari stalls on every page, some sites never finish loading, or one network works while another does not. Rule out the internet connection before clearing browser data.
Check the Internet Connection
- Open Control Center and make sure Wi-Fi or cellular data is on.
- Try another internet app such as Mail, App Store, or Maps.
- If nothing works online, turn Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds and turn it off.
- Try switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Open Safari and test a simple site such as apple.com.
If every app fails, Safari is not the problem. Restart the router, check cellular signal, or test another network.
Clear Safari History and Website Data
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safari.
- Tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Confirm the action.
- Reopen Safari and try the page again.
This removes cached site data and signs you out of many websites. It is useful when one site or several sites are stuck on stale data.
Force-Close Safari and Restart
- Open the App Switcher by swiping up and pausing, or double-clicking Home on older iPhones.
- Swipe Safari away.
- Restart the iPhone.
- After startup, open Safari and test again.
Less Common Causes
Screen Time Web Restrictions
Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content. If testing, switch to Unrestricted Access or add the site to the allowed list.
One Site May Be Down
If only one website fails, test it on another device or network. The site itself may be unavailable.
DNS Problems
If Wi-Fi works but websites do not resolve, open the Wi-Fi network info screen, choose Configure DNS, switch to Manual, and test a public DNS server such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8.
Reset Network Settings
As a last step, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved Wi-Fi passwords, cellular settings, and VPN configurations.
