No sound on an iPhone can come from silent mode, low ringer volume, a Focus mode, Bluetooth routing, blocked speakers, app-specific settings, or actual speaker damage. Start with the physical switch and output routing before assuming the speaker failed.
These steps apply to iPhones running recent iOS versions, including models with an Action Button instead of a Ring/Silent switch.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if calls, music, notifications, or the ringer are silent, or if pressing the volume buttons does not seem to change the sound you expect.
Check Silent Mode and Volume
- Look at the Ring/Silent switch above the volume buttons. If orange is visible, the iPhone is in Silent Mode.
- On iPhone models with an Action Button, check Settings > Action Button and confirm it is not set to mute unexpectedly.
- Press the volume buttons on the Home Screen and watch the on-screen indicator.
- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Make sure the Ringer and Alerts slider is not at the bottom.
- Turn on Change with Buttons if you want the buttons to adjust ringer volume.
Check Focus and Bluetooth Output
- Open Control Center and look for an active Focus mode such as Do Not Disturb, Sleep, or Work. Turn it off to test.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Disconnect AirPods, car systems, speakers, or headphones that may be receiving audio.
- In Control Center, touch and hold the audio card and confirm the output is set to iPhone when you want phone speakers.
Sound can route to a device you forgot was connected, even if that speaker or headset is in another room or a car nearby.
Clean Speakers and Restart
- Inspect the bottom speaker grille near the charging port and the earpiece area.
- Use a soft, dry, anti-static brush to remove lint or dust.
- Do not push sharp or metal objects into speaker holes.
- Restart the iPhone, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Test with music, a video, and a phone call to check both speaker paths.
If Sound Is Still Missing
Check App Sound Settings
Games, social apps, and video apps can have their own mute buttons or volume controls. Test more than one app before calling it a system-wide issue.
Water Can Muffle Sound
After rain or a splash, water in the speaker grille can make audio quiet or distorted. Let the phone dry speaker-down in a safe place. Avoid blasting compressed air into wet openings.
Test Stereo Speakers
Newer iPhones use the bottom speaker and the earpiece area for stereo media. Play a video and cover each area briefly to see whether only one speaker is affected.
Get Hardware Checked
If sound fails through speakers, headphones, and Bluetooth after restart and settings checks, arrange an Apple or authorized service evaluation.
