Safari extensions on Mac come from the Mac App Store, not a separate browser store. Many are companion apps that add Safari features such as password filling, ad blocking, translation, shopping tools, or privacy controls. After installing one, you still need to enable it inside Safari.

Find and install a Safari extension
Installation starts in Safari but finishes through the App Store.
- Open Safari.
- Choose Safari > Settings from the menu bar.
- Open the Extensions tab.
- Click More Extensions to open the Safari extensions area in the Mac App Store.
- Find the extension you want and click Get or the price.
- Follow the App Store prompts to install it.
- Return to Safari > Settings > Extensions and turn on the extension toggle.
An extension is not active just because the app is installed. The Safari toggle is the step people often miss.
Turn an extension on or off
Disable an extension when you want to pause it without deleting the app.
- Open Safari > Settings.
- Click Extensions.
- Find the extension in the list.
- Switch it off to disable it, or on to enable it.
Changes apply immediately. Some extensions also show website access options on the same screen.
Remove a Safari extension completely
Removing the companion app removes the extension.
- Open Finder.
- Choose Applications.
- Find the app connected to the extension. Its name usually matches the extension name.
- Drag the app to the Trash or right-click and choose Move to Trash.
- Empty the Trash if you want it fully removed.
- Check Safari > Settings > Extensions to confirm it is gone.
More control
Manage per-site access
If Safari shows an extensions icon in the toolbar, use it to allow or deny an extension on the current site. This matters for extensions that can read or change website content.
Check macOS extension permissions
If an extension installs but never appears in Safari, open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > Safari Extensions and make sure macOS allows it.
iPhone and iPad support varies
Some Safari extensions also work on iPhone or iPad, but the developer must support iOS or iPadOS. Manage those under Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions on newer iOS versions.
