Rust is a demanding PC game, and crashes usually come from corrupted game files, graphics driver trouble, VRAM pressure, or software conflicts. Work from the quick fixes to the deeper checks so you do not change more than needed.
These steps apply to Rust on Windows PC through Steam. Rust is not officially supported on Mac or Linux.

Verify game files and update your driver
These two checks solve many Rust crash reports because they repair the install and bring the graphics stack current.
- Open Steam and right-click Rust in your Library.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files or Local Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam scan the full install and re-download missing or damaged files.
- Update your graphics driver through NVIDIA, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, or Intel’s driver assistant.
- Restart the PC after the driver update.
- If crashes started immediately after a new driver, test rolling back to the previous driver version.
If Rust always crashed at the same point, such as joining a server or entering a busy area, test that exact spot again after verification and driver work.
Lower settings that push VRAM usage
Rust can crash when video memory fills, especially on graphics cards with 6 GB of VRAM or less.
- Open Rust Settings > Graphics.
- Lower Texture Quality first because it is one of the biggest VRAM users.
- Reduce Object Quality, Terrain Quality, and Shadow Quality.
- Use a lighter anti-aliasing option such as FXAA, or turn anti-aliasing off for testing.
- Test on a busy server with many structures if that is where crashes usually happen.
Player-built areas load many objects and textures at once. A setting that works on an empty server can still crash in a crowded base or monument.
Disable overlays and close memory-heavy apps
Discord overlay, Steam overlay, capture tools, and RGB software can conflict with Rust for some players. Turn them off one at a time so you can identify the real culprit.
Steam overlay is under Steam > Settings > In-Game. Also test closing Discord overlay, recording tools, and peripheral apps from Corsair, Razer, Logitech, or similar software.
Rust recommends 16 GB of system RAM. If your PC has 8 GB, close browsers, launchers, and background apps before playing.
Read the crash report
Rust stores crash reports inside its install directory. In Steam, right-click Rust, choose Manage > Browse local files, then look for the crash_reports folder.
The newest report may name the module or process that failed. Include that detail if you ask for help on Rust forums or the Steam community hub.
