Robinhood Account Restricted? Here’s What It Means and How to Fix It

A Robinhood restriction usually limits specific actions such as buying, selling, or withdrawing. The account is not necessarily closed, and many restrictions lift after identity, deposit, or security checks are resolved.

Does this affect you?

Use this for Robinhood brokerage accounts in the iOS app, Android app, or robinhood.com when a message says trading, transfers, withdrawals, or account actions are restricted.

Find the exact reason and fix it

Robinhood normally shows the cause once you tap into the restriction notice.

  1. Open Robinhood and tap the account icon.
  2. Look for a banner or notification about the restriction and tap it.
  3. If identity verification is requested, upload the requested driver’s license, state ID, passport, or other document with a clear, unedited photo.
  4. If the restriction is tied to a pending deposit or Instant Deposit reversal, wait for the bank transfer to settle. This can take several business days.
  5. If suspicious activity is mentioned, confirm recent transactions or complete any identity check Robinhood presents.
  6. After completing the requested action, watch the app for status updates. Many restrictions lift within 24 to 48 hours.

If the app does not explain the reason

Some compliance or security restrictions are intentionally vague in the app.

  1. Go to Account > Help > Contact Us in the Robinhood app, or use the Help Center at robinhood.com.
  2. Choose account access, trading restrictions, identity verification, or the closest matching topic.
  3. Describe the exact message you see and attach a screenshot if available.
  4. Wait for Robinhood Support to explain the next step. Responses commonly take a few business days.

More control

Check profile details against your ID

A mismatch in name, address, date of birth, or Social Security number can cause verification failure. Correct typos before resubmitting documents.

Understand unsettled deposits

Using Instant Deposits and then trying to withdraw before the underlying transfer settles is a common trigger. Robinhood may hold withdrawals until the deposit clears, often up to five business days.

New location can trigger security review

Signing in through a VPN, new country, or unfamiliar device can create a security restriction unrelated to your trading behavior.

Restriction is not the same as closure

A restriction limits actions while the account remains open. A fully deactivated or closed account requires Robinhood Support’s separate appeal or account-review process.
