PS5 Controller Drift: How to Fix DualSense Stick Drift

Consoles and gaming troubleshooting category image

DualSense stick drift makes a character move, a camera pan, or aim pull even when you are not touching the analog stick. It is usually caused by dust, debris, sensor wear, or a controller that no longer centers correctly.

These steps apply to the PS5 DualSense wireless controller and DualSense Edge.

Does this affect you?

Use this if movement continues after you release the stick, or if a menu selection slowly moves by itself while the controller is sitting untouched.

Confirm it’s actually stick drift

First make sure the symptom is not caused by one game’s sensitivity or camera setting.

  1. Set the controller on a flat surface and watch the PS5 Home screen or a menu.
  2. If the selection moves without touching the sticks, drift is likely.
  3. Use a free online gamepad tester from a PS5 browser workaround, phone, or PC to watch the stick position as a live dot.
  4. Check whether the stick returns to center when released.
  5. Test more than one game.
  6. If it happens only in one game, inspect that game’s controller, sensitivity, and dead-zone settings first.

The standard DualSense does not have the same on-console stick calibration tools as the DualSense Edge, so an external tester is often the clearest way to confirm the problem.

Clean around the drifting stick

Dust under the stick edge is common, and cleaning is safe when done lightly.

  1. Power off the controller or disconnect it from the console.
  2. Use compressed air in short bursts around the base of the drifting stick.
  3. Move the stick slowly in circles while blowing air around the rim.
  4. Lightly dampen a cotton swab with 90 percent or higher isopropyl alcohol.
  5. Clean around the base of the stick where it meets the shell.
  6. Let the controller air dry for at least 15 to 20 minutes.
  7. Test the controller again after it is fully dry.

The swab should be damp, not wet. Cleaning can remove debris, but it cannot rebuild a worn analog sensor.

Request a repair or replacement

If drift returns quickly after cleaning, worn hardware is more likely than dirt.

  1. Check the controller purchase date and warranty status.
  2. Open a repair request through PlayStation’s official support site for your region.
  3. Follow the shipping or service instructions and keep the case number.
  4. If the controller is out of warranty, compare the repair cost with replacement.

Many games offer a Dead Zone setting. Increasing it slightly can hide light drift while you wait for service, but it does not fix the stick.

DualSense Edge owners can replace the stick module more easily than standard DualSense owners. Check Sony’s model-specific guidance before sending that controller away.

A wired USB test can rule out wireless interference. If drift disappears only when wired, check nearby Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz interference before replacing the controller.
