Pixel phones get warm during charging, navigation, video calls, gaming, and heavy camera use. It becomes a problem when the phone stays hot during light use, shows a temperature warning, slows down, or feels hot with no obvious reason.
These steps apply to Google Pixel 6 through Pixel 9 series phones running recent Android versions.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your Pixel feels uncomfortably hot, dims the screen by itself, pauses features, or displays a cool-down message.
Identify the Heat Trigger
- Think about what the phone was doing before it heated up: charging, GPS navigation, video calls, games, streaming, camera use, or direct sun.
- If charging caused it, unplug the phone and let it cool before charging again.
- If it was in a hot car or direct sunlight, move it to shade or an air-conditioned space.
- If a heavy app caused it, close the app and let the phone rest.
Phones are designed for normal room-temperature use. Very hot environments can push the phone past safe operating temperature even if nothing is wrong with the phone.
Check for a Runaway App
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Tap Battery usage.
- Look for an app using far more battery than expected.
- Tap the app and limit background activity if available.
- Use Force stop to close it immediately.
- Check the Play Store for an app update or uninstall the app temporarily if the issue began after an update.
Restart and Update
- Hold the Power button and tap Restart.
- After reboot, use the phone normally and watch whether heat returns.
- Open Settings > System > System update.
- Install pending updates because Google often ships battery and thermal fixes.
Heat and Safety Notes
Cases Can Trap Heat
Wallet cases and thick cases can hold heat during charging or gaming. Test with the case removed.
Thermal Throttling Is Protective
If the phone dims, slows, or disables features during a warning, it is protecting itself. Let it sit untouched until the warning clears.
Get Help for No-Trigger Heat
If the Pixel overheats during light use, feels hot while powered off, or shows battery swelling, contact Pixel Support or an authorized repair provider. A failing battery can be a safety risk.
