Missing Android photos are often not permanently gone. They may be in Trash, under another Google account, hidden in a locked folder, still stored in DCIM but not indexed by Gallery, or on an SD card the phone cannot read.
These steps apply to Android phones using Google Photos, Samsung Gallery, or another built-in Gallery app.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if recent photos vanished, your camera roll looks empty, or Google Photos and Gallery show different sets of images.
Check Trash or Recently Deleted
- Open Google Photos or your phone Gallery app.
- In Google Photos, tap Library > Trash.
- In Gallery, look for Recently deleted, Trash, or Bin.
- Select missing photos if you find them.
- Tap Restore.
Google Photos commonly keeps deleted items for up to 60 days. Some Gallery apps keep them for 15 or 30 days.
Check the Google Account
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Confirm which Google account is active.
- Switch to another account on the phone if you have more than one.
- If the photos are there, keep using that account or download and re-upload them to the account you prefer.
Check Backup and Device Storage
- Open Google Photos settings and check Backup.
- If Backup was off, turning it on now backs up items still on the phone but cannot restore deleted files.
- Open the Files app.
- Browse Internal storage > DCIM > Camera.
- If the files are there but Gallery is empty, restart the phone so the media index can refresh.
Other Places to Look
- Check Google Photos Locked Folder under Library or Utilities.
- On Samsung, check Gallery locked areas, Secure Folder, and any hidden albums.
- If photos were stored on an SD card, reinsert it and confirm it appears in Settings > Storage.
- Check Google account storage at one.google.com/storage because a full account can pause backup.
If Nothing Turns Up
If photos are not in Trash, not under another account, not in device folders, not in locked storage, and not on an SD card, they may have been deleted outside the recovery window. If the phone or account is shared, ask whether someone removed them.
