OneDrive version history can rescue a file after a bad edit, overwrite, or unwanted shared change. It stores earlier saved versions for many files, especially Office documents, so you can preview and restore an older copy.
Does this affect you?
Use this for OneDrive on the web, the OneDrive sync folder on Windows or Mac, and Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files stored in OneDrive. Version availability depends on account type and file activity.
Restore a previous version of one file
Use this when one document was changed incorrectly.
- Open onedrive.com, or open your synced OneDrive folder.
- Right-click the file.
- Choose Version history.
- Review the saved versions by date, time, and editor where available.
- Open or preview a version to confirm it is the one you need.
- Click Restore.
Restoring makes that older version the current version of the file. In many cases, the newer version remains in the history as well.
Restore your whole OneDrive
Use this only for widespread problems, such as ransomware, mass edits, or a major sync mistake.
- Sign in at onedrive.com.
- Open Settings and choose Restore your OneDrive, or go to onedrive.com/restore.
- Pick a suggested time or a custom point within the available restore window.
- Review the activity summary.
- Click Restore to roll back OneDrive to that point.
This affects many files at once, so it is much more drastic than restoring one document version.
Check versions inside Office apps
If the file is already open, you may not need to leave Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Click the file name at the top of the Office window, or on Windows use File > Info > Version History.
- Select an earlier version.
- Review it in the separate read-only window.
- Click Restore if it is the correct version.
More control
Version history is not the Recycle Bin
Version history restores an older state of a file that still exists. If the file was deleted, use the OneDrive Recycle Bin instead.
Retention varies
Personal, work, and school accounts can keep different numbers of versions or different restore windows. Very active files may also have more version entries.
Non-Office files may behave differently
Office documents save versions often during editing. PDFs, images, and other file types may only get new versions when the whole file is replaced or uploaded again.
Downloaded copies do not change
Restoring a OneDrive file changes the cloud copy and live shared links. Copies someone already downloaded remain separate.
