Windows shows only one display even though a second monitor is powered on and connected. This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 desktops and laptops using HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, VGA, docks, or adapters.
Does This Affect You?
If Display settings does not show the monitor and Detect finds nothing, the issue is usually the monitor input, cable, port, dock, USB-C video support, or graphics driver.
Check the Cable, Port, and Detect Button
Start with the quick physical checks.
- Make sure the monitor is on and set to the correct input, such as HDMI 1, DisplayPort, or USB-C.
- Try another video cable and another port on the laptop, desktop GPU, or monitor if available.
- Open Settings > System > Display, scroll to Multiple displays, and click Detect.
- Test each output port individually because some laptops or graphics cards do not activate every port in every graphics mode.
- Press Windows+P and try Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only.
Update the Graphics Driver
Use this after the physical checks.
- Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the graphics adapter, and choose Update driver.
- For a fuller update, download the latest driver from Intel, NVIDIA, AMD, or the laptop manufacturer.
- Restart after installing, then return to Display settings and click Detect again.
- On hybrid-graphics laptops, check whether the port is routed through integrated or dedicated graphics and whether the active graphics mode supports it.
Docks and adapters can need their own firmware or drivers. Check the dock maker support page if the monitor connects through USB-C, Thunderbolt, HDMI adapters, or a docking station. Also confirm the laptop USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt; some USB-C ports are data or charging only.
Test the monitor with another computer using a known-good cable. If it works there, focus on the original PC. If it is not detected anywhere after cable swaps, the monitor input board may need warranty service or repair.
