If your microwave still heats but the glass tray no longer rotates, the problem is usually mechanical. The tray may be off its coupler, the roller ring may be dirty or broken, or the small motor under the floor may have failed.
These steps apply to standard countertop and over-the-range microwaves from GE, Samsung, Panasonic, and similar brands with rotating glass turntables.
Does this affect you?
A non-spinning turntable does not usually stop the microwave from heating. It does make heating less even because food no longer moves through the microwave pattern inside the cavity.
Reseat and clean the tray and roller ring
This fixes most turntable problems.
- Unplug the microwave.
- Lift out the glass tray.
- Remove the plastic roller ring underneath it.
- Wash the tray and roller ring with warm soapy water and clear crumbs from the wheels.
- Check that each roller wheel turns and is not cracked or missing.
- Wipe the center drive coupler, the small raised part in the middle of the microwave floor.
- Reinstall the roller ring, then center the tray so the underside notch engages the coupler.
- Test with a cup of water inside.
Never run the microwave empty and never open the outer housing or back panel. The high-voltage capacitor inside can remain dangerous after unplugging.
Check the drive motor
If the tray, ring, and coupler are clean and seated but the tray still will not move, the drive motor may be bad.
- Place a cup of water inside and run the microwave for about 10 seconds while watching the coupler area.
- Listen for faint humming or whirring from below the floor.
- If the motor hums but the coupler does not move, the small gear may be stripped.
- If there is no sound and no motion, the motor may have failed electrically.
You can rotate food halfway through cooking as a temporary workaround, but expect more hot and cold spots until the turntable works again.
On many models, a technician can replace the turntable motor from underneath without entering the high-voltage section. Over-the-range and built-in units may be harder to access, so service is often simpler than removing the microwave from its mount yourself.
