Microwave Sparking Inside? What to Do (and When to Stop Using It)

Sparks inside a microwave should be taken seriously. The cause is often simple, such as metal trim or burned food on the waveguide cover, but you should stop the cycle immediately and inspect before using the microwave again.

These steps apply to countertop, over-the-range, and built-in microwaves from any brand.

Arcing is commonly caused by metal reflecting microwave energy or by a damaged waveguide cover. The waveguide cover is the small mica or ceramic plate inside the cooking cavity that protects the opening where energy enters. Grease or burned splatter on that cover can spark.

Stop the microwave and unplug it as soon as you see sparking. Never open the outer case or touch parts behind the interior walls. Do not test the microwave empty; always put a cup of water inside. If sparking continues after the safe checks below, stop using it.

Check for metal and food splatter

  1. Unplug the microwave and open the door.
  2. Remove the container and check for foil, twist ties, metallic handles, or gold/silver rimmed dishes.
  3. Inspect the interior walls and ceiling, especially around the waveguide cover.
  4. Clean cooled food splatter with warm water and mild dish soap.
  5. Let the interior dry fully, then test briefly with a cup of water inside.

Replace the waveguide cover

A damaged waveguide cover is one of the few sparking-related parts that can often be replaced without opening the outer case.

  1. With the microwave unplugged, locate the flat cover on the interior side or rear wall.
  2. If it is cracked, charred through, brittle, bubbled, or has a hole, order the exact replacement cover for the model.
  3. Remove the old cover according to the design, usually by unscrewing or sliding it out.
  4. Install the new cover the same way.
  5. Test with a cup of water inside and stop immediately if arcing returns.

Safe DIY work stops at removing metal, cleaning the cavity, and replacing an accessible waveguide cover. Do not inspect the magnetron, capacitor, diode, or internal wiring yourself.

If sparks appear near the door seal, from a vent, or after a fresh waveguide cover, the cause is likely internal. At that point, compare the cost of service with replacement. For many older countertop units, replacement is the practical choice.
