Your laptop fan seems completely still: no airflow, no fan noise, even when the laptop is warm. This applies to Windows laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, and similar brands with internal cooling fans.
Does This Affect You?
A laptop fan that never spins can be caused by passive power settings, dust blocking the vents, a stuck controller, or a failed fan motor. Some laptops intentionally keep fans off during light work, so confirm the fan fails under real load before opening anything.
Confirm the Fan Is Not Spinning Under Real Load
A silent fan at idle may be normal.
- Close extra apps, then run something demanding such as a game, benchmark, or video export for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Listen near the keyboard and side or rear vents for even faint fan movement.
- Feel for airflow at the exhaust vent while the bottom gets warm. Hot case plus no airflow is suspicious.
- Open Task Manager > Performance to confirm the CPU is actually under load.
- Run the fan diagnostic in Dell SupportAssist, HP Support Assistant, Lenovo Vantage, or your brand tool if it offers one.
Check Power and BIOS Fan Settings
A quiet or battery-saving mode can hold fan speed low.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery and leave Battery saver or extreme quiet modes for testing.
- Open the manufacturer app and check for thermal profiles such as Quiet, Balanced, Performance, or Turbo.
- Restart into BIOS/UEFI using the model key, often F2, Delete, or Esc.
- Look for fan or thermal settings and set fan control to Auto if it was manually reduced.
- If settings look wrong and you are unsure, reset BIOS defaults rather than changing unrelated options.

Clear Dust from the Accessible Vents
External cleaning can help if dust is blocking airflow or stalling the fan.
- Power off the laptop and unplug the charger.
- Use compressed air in short bursts at the exhaust vent and bottom intake vents.
- If you can see the fan blades, hold them still gently with a non-metal tool while blowing air so they do not overspin.
- Brush visible dust from vent grilles with an anti-static or soft dry brush.
- Power on and repeat the load test.
If external cleaning and diagnostics confirm the fan does not respond, the blockage may be inside the fan housing or the fan assembly may have failed. Opening laptops varies by model and can void warranty, so check the service manual and warranty status before attempting it. Local repair shops routinely clean and replace laptop fans. A failed fan motor usually means replacing the fan assembly, not the whole laptop.
