Your laptop will not charge with any outlet you try, and you suspect the port itself may be damaged. This applies to laptops with barrel charging connectors or USB-C charging ports from HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, and similar brands.
Does This Affect You?
A failed charging port can look like a dead laptop, but so can a bad cable, weak power brick, debris in the port, a bent pin, or a failed battery. Narrow the cause before paying for port repair.
Confirm It Is the Port, Not the Cable or Battery
Start outside the laptop.
- Try another compatible charger and cable, ideally one known to work on the same model or a similar laptop.
- Gently move the connector while watching the charging light or battery icon. Flickering charge usually points to a loose or damaged port.
- Try another wall outlet or power strip.
- Inspect the port with a flashlight for lint, broken plastic, a bent barrel-connector pin, or visible damage.
- If the laptop charges only at one cable angle, the port or internal connection is likely loose.
Clean the Port Safely
Lint and dust are common, especially in USB-C ports.
- Shut the laptop down and unplug the charger.
- Use compressed air with short bursts so debris can fall out instead of being packed deeper.
- For stuck lint, use a wooden or plastic toothpick gently. Do not use metal.
- If a barrel-port center pin is bent, a plastic spudger may straighten it, but it can snap. Treat this as a last resort before repair.
- Reconnect the charger and test.
If the laptop charges over USB-C, try another USB-C port if the model supports charging from more than one. That can keep you working even if one port is damaged.
A cracked port, snapped pin, or connection that never works with known-good chargers usually needs physical repair. Many laptop charging ports are soldered to the motherboard or attached through an internal cable, so repair difficulty varies. Check warranty or protection-plan coverage before paying a shop.
If a repair shop says the port is fine, ask them to test battery health and the charger under load. A completely failed battery or weak adapter can imitate port failure.
