Every Apple ID gets a small amount of free iCloud storage, and it fills quickly with Photos, device backups, Messages, and app data. When it is full, new backups and photo syncing can stop.

Use this if your iPhone, iPad, or Mac warns that iCloud storage is full or backups are failing because there is not enough iCloud space.
Buy more iCloud storage
This is the fastest fix and takes effect quickly.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your name.
- Choose iCloud.
- Tap Manage Account Storage or iCloud Storage.
- Choose Upgrade to iCloud+ or Change Storage Plan.
- Select a plan such as 50 GB, 200 GB, or 2 TB.
- Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or Apple ID password.
- Wait a few minutes for Photos and backups to resume.
Free up space without paying
Use this if you are only slightly over the limit.
- Open Settings > your name > iCloud > Manage Account Storage.
- Review what uses the most space, usually Photos, Backups, Messages, or app data.
- Open Photos > Recently Deleted and empty it if you no longer need those items.
- Under Backups, delete backups from devices you no longer own.
- Open your current device backup and use Show All Apps to exclude large replaceable app data.
- Review Messages in iCloud and remove old conversations with large attachments if appropriate.

Optimize iPhone Storage saves device space by keeping smaller local copies of photos. It does not reduce iCloud storage use by itself.
Check Family Sharing
If someone in your family already pays for 200 GB or 2 TB, shared iCloud storage may be available without buying your own plan. One larger shared plan can be cheaper than several small ones.
Downgrade carefully
You can lower the storage plan later, but Apple may not apply the downgrade if your actual usage is above the new limit. Delete or download files first.
