Hulu Not Working? How to Fix It

TV and streaming troubleshooting category image

Hulu can fail in several ways: the app will not open, it buffers constantly, it freezes after a few seconds, or it crashes back to the home screen. The same basic checks work across TVs, phones, browsers, and streaming devices.

Start by ruling out a Hulu outage, then restart the app and device, update or reinstall Hulu, and finally check network speed, stream limits, cache, and account status.

Does this affect you?

Use this if Hulu is not loading or playing on a smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, phone, tablet, or web browser.

Check for a Hulu outage

  1. On a phone or computer, check an outage tracker such as Downdetector for Hulu.
  2. Check Hulu’s official support account or status posts for alerts.
  3. If reports are spiking, wait 30 to 60 minutes and try again.
  4. If there is no outage, continue troubleshooting your device.

Outages are more common during big live events when traffic is heavy.

Restart Hulu and the device

  1. Fully close the Hulu app, not just leave it with the Home button.
  2. Restart the streaming device or TV. For a stick or box, unplug power for about 10 seconds.
  3. Reopen Hulu and sign back in if prompted.
  4. If the issue continues, restart the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds.

This clears cached errors and stale network sessions that a simple app reopen may not fix.

Update or reinstall Hulu

  1. Open your device’s app store or channel store.
  2. Check whether Hulu has an update and install it.
  3. If it is already current, uninstall Hulu completely.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Reinstall Hulu and sign in again.

A fresh install replaces corrupted app data that can survive ordinary updates.

Check speed, stream limits, cache, and account status

Hulu recommends about 3 Mbps for standard streaming, 8 Mbps for HD, and 16 Mbps for 4K where supported. Run a speed test on the same network as the device if buffering is the main symptom.

Most base Hulu plans allow two simultaneous streams. If someone else is watching, you may hit the limit. Check hulu.com account settings and add-ons if needed.

On Android or Android TV devices, clear Hulu cache from Settings > Apps > Hulu > Storage > Clear Cache. Avoid Clear Data unless you are willing to sign in again.

If Hulu fails on every device, sign in at hulu.com from a browser. Billing, account, or service-side errors must be fixed there before app troubleshooting will help.
