HP printers without a large screen use light patterns as error messages. Which light blinks, whether it stays solid, and whether several lights blink together all change the meaning.

Identify the blinking light and fix it
Match the pattern on the printer to the closest item below.
- Power light blinking alone: the printer may be waking, warming up, or processing a job. Wait about 30 seconds. If it never stops, power the printer off, wait 20 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Ink or cartridge light blinking: open the cartridge door, remove the indicated cartridge, check for orange or pink protective tape, and reinstall it firmly until it clicks.
- Ink light still blinking after reseating: clean the cartridge contacts and matching carriage contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth, then reinstall the cartridge.
- Wireless light blinking or off: the printer is not connected to Wi-Fi. Open Wireless, Network Setup, or Wireless Setup Wizard and reconnect to the correct network.
- Multiple lights blinking together: check for a paper jam, open cover, or unlatched door. Inspect the paper path and close every panel fully.
- No pattern matches: search HP Support for your exact model number plus blinking lights because some models use unique light codes.

Repeating patterns can mean hardware
If the same blink returns immediately after a full power cycle and ink, paper, and covers are fine, the printer may have a printhead, sensor, or internal hardware fault.
Non-HP cartridges can trigger cartridge blinks
Some HP models keep blinking when a cartridge chip is not recognized, even if the cartridge is physically installed correctly. That is common with some third-party or refilled ink.
