Borderless printing fills the page edge to edge with no white margin. On HP printers, it depends on choosing a supported borderless photo size and matching photo paper type. If either setting is wrong, the borderless option may disappear or print with margins.

Use this if HP Smart or the HP driver will not show borderless printing, photos print with white edges, or the borderless size is grayed out.
Print borderless from HP Smart
HP Smart is the simplest route for phone and computer photo printing.
- Open HP Smart and choose Print Photos.
- Select the photo.
- Choose a supported photo paper size such as 4×6 or 5×7.
- Set paper type to the loaded photo paper, such as glossy or matte.
- Print. Expect slight auto-cropping so the image reaches the paper edges.
Print borderless from Windows or Mac
Use this from a photo editor, File Explorer, Finder, or another app.
- Open the photo and choose Print.
- Open HP Printer Properties, Preferences, or the expanded Mac print settings.
- Select a paper size explicitly labeled Borderless, such as 4 x 6 in Borderless.
- Set media type to the correct photo paper.
- Print after confirming the preview.
More control
Borderless is often a paper size
Many HP drivers do not use a separate borderless checkbox. The feature appears as special borderless size entries.
Not every size supports borderless
Entry-level models may support borderless on photo sizes but not plain Letter or A4 documents.
Paper type can gray it out
Choose photo paper before checking the borderless size list. Plain paper settings can disable borderless options.
A thin white edge means a size mismatch
Off-brand photo paper may be cut slightly differently. Try another size setting or HP paper if a small sliver remains.
Update the driver
If a borderless option disappeared, update through HP Smart or download the newest package from HP Support.
