Xbox cloud saves usually work automatically when you are signed into Xbox Live and connected to the internet. Before retiring an old console, it is still worth confirming your saves have actually synced.
These steps apply to Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One consoles with an active Xbox Live account and internet connection.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you are switching consoles or want your saved progress to appear on another Xbox.
Turn on cloud saves and let them sync
- On the old Xbox, open Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage.
- Select your storage device.
- Confirm cloud save or automatic save upload is enabled if the option appears.
- Open each game you care about and play briefly or reach a save point.
- Close the game normally and leave the console online for a few minutes.
- Do not disconnect the old console immediately after playing.
Xbox saves are tied to your Microsoft account and the game, not just the physical console.
Load saves on the new Xbox
- Sign in on the new Xbox with the same Microsoft account.
- Install the game from your library.
- Launch the game while connected to the internet.
- Wait for cloud sync to finish.
- If asked to choose between local and cloud saves, pick the cloud save that has your progress.
If the game creates a fresh local save before syncing, read the prompt carefully so you do not keep the empty save by mistake.
Fix saves that do not appear
- Confirm the email/account is exactly the same as on the old Xbox.
- Make sure the new console is online.
- Check the game for its own Sync or Restore option if it has one.
- Return to the old console and make sure the save uploaded if you still have it.
- Check whether the game uses its own separate cloud system or publisher account.
A small number of older games or very large-save games may not support Xbox cloud saves. Check the game listing or support page if one title never syncs.
Limits and faster transfers
Xbox cloud storage has limits, and Xbox should warn you if a save cannot upload. During a console move, Ethernet on the old console is more reliable than Wi-Fi for finishing multiple uploads.
