Streaming to Twitch needs three pieces working together: a Twitch account, OBS Studio or another broadcasting app, and settings that match your upload speed. Once those are connected, going live is mostly a button press.
These steps apply to streaming from a Windows PC using OBS Studio for a first Twitch channel.

Use this if you want to stream gameplay to Twitch and are setting up OBS for the first time.
Set up your first stream
- Create a Twitch account at twitch.tv and choose a channel name you can keep long term.
- Download OBS Studio from obsproject.com and install it.
- Use OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard on first launch if it appears.
- Add a Game Capture source from Sources > + > Game Capture.
- Open Twitch Creator Dashboard > Settings > Stream and copy your Stream Key.
- Keep the stream key private because anyone with it can stream to your channel.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose Twitch, and paste the key.
- Open Settings > Output and set bitrate for your upload speed.
- Click Start Streaming and check your Twitch channel page in a browser.
For 1080p streaming, 4500 to 6000 Kbps is a sensible starting range. Use 2500 to 3500 Kbps if your upload speed is limited.
Polish the stream setup
- Add a webcam from Sources > + > Video Capture Device if you want a camera overlay.
- Create scenes such as Starting Soon, Gameplay, and Be Right Back.
- Check microphone levels in the OBS Audio Mixer.
- Aim for green with occasional yellow, not constant red clipping.
- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi for a steadier upload.
- Keep Twitch chat visible on a second monitor or check it between rounds.
A short test stream or recording before a real session catches audio, bitrate, and capture mistakes early.
First-stream realities
Low or zero viewers at first is normal. Twitch discovery favors consistent channels, clear categories, and repeat schedules more than one perfect first stream.
If Game Capture has trouble with a game, switch the game to Borderless Windowed mode. It often captures more reliably than exclusive fullscreen and makes checking chat easier.
Do not play copyrighted music from Spotify or a personal library on stream unless you have rights. Twitch can flag recorded VOD audio. Use Twitch-safe or royalty-free music instead.
