How to Show Hidden Files and Folders on Windows

Windows hidden files illustration

Windows hides some files and folders by default, including configuration folders such as AppData and items marked hidden by apps or users. They are still there; File Explorer is just filtering them out.

This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Does This Affect You?

Turn on hidden items when a guide points you to a folder you cannot see. Only show protected operating system files when you specifically need a system file.

Show Hidden Items in File Explorer

  1. Open File Explorer with Windows key + E.
  2. On Windows 11, choose View > Show > Hidden items.
  3. On Windows 10, open the View tab and check Hidden items.
  4. Hidden files and folders appear slightly faded.
  5. Repeat the steps and uncheck the option to hide them again.

Show Protected Operating System Files

  1. Open File Explorer Options. On Windows 11, use View > Show > Options. On Windows 10, use View > Options.
  2. Open the View tab.
  3. Clear Hide protected operating system files.
  4. Confirm the warning and click OK.
  5. Turn this setting back on when finished so system files are not accidentally changed.

Show File Extensions

In the same View options, turn off Hide extensions for known file types. This helps spot disguised files and edit extensions correctly.

Global Setting

Hidden items is a File Explorer-wide setting, not just a setting for the current folder.

Search May Still Skip Some Locations

Even with hidden files visible, Windows Search may not index protected folders. Type the exact path in the address bar when needed.
