How to Set Up Sonos Multi-Room Audio

Smart home troubleshooting category image

Sonos is built around multi-room audio. Each speaker joins your Sonos system, then you can group rooms for synced playback or let each room play something different.

These steps apply to current Sonos speakers such as One, Era, Beam, Move, and similar models managed in the Sonos app.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you have more than one Sonos speaker and want synchronized music across rooms or independent playback from one app.

Add each speaker to Sonos

  1. Plug in the speaker.
  2. Wait for the setup light pattern.
  3. Open the Sonos app.
  4. Sign in or create a Sonos account.
  5. Tap Add a product.
  6. Follow the prompts while the app finds the speaker.
  7. Connect it to your network.
  8. Name the speaker by room, such as Kitchen or Bedroom.
  9. Repeat for every additional Sonos speaker.

Every speaker needs to appear in the Sonos room list before multi-room grouping is useful.

Group speakers for synced playback

  1. Start music on one Sonos speaker.
  2. Tap the Now Playing bar.
  3. Tap the room or grouping icon.
  4. Select the additional rooms you want to join.
  5. Confirm they begin playing the same audio.
  6. Deselect a room later to remove it from the group without stopping all rooms.

Grouped Sonos rooms should play tightly in sync so you do not hear a distracting delay while moving between rooms.

Stereo pairs, services, and voice control

Two identical Sonos speakers in the same room can be configured as a left/right stereo pair under Settings > System. That is different from grouping rooms for whole-home playback.

You do not have to group everything. Leave rooms ungrouped if you want different music in different spaces. Add streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music under Settings > Services & Voice so Sonos can play directly from those services.

If your Sonos speaker has microphones, enable a supported voice assistant under voice settings. Some newer Sonos models support Amazon Alexa and Sonos Voice Control but not Google Assistant, so check the model before planning around a specific assistant.
