How to Set Up SmartThings Routines

SmartThings routines bundle multiple device actions behind one trigger. They can run automatically from a schedule or sensor, or manually as a one-tap shortcut.

These steps apply to the SmartThings app on iPhone and Android with devices connected directly or through a SmartThings-compatible hub.

Use this if you want one routine to lock a door, turn off lights, change the thermostat, and adjust other devices together.

Create an automatic routine

1. Open the SmartThings app.
2. Tap the Automations tab.
3. Tap +.
4. Choose Add routine.
5. Under If, choose a trigger.
6. Use a time of day, device state, location arrival or departure, or another supported condition.
7. Under Then, tap Add action.
8. Select each device and action.
9. Name the routine.
10. Tap Save or the checkmark.

The routine now runs when the trigger condition is met. Add conditions such as only after sunset or only if someone is home when you need context-aware behavior.

Create a manual routine

A manual routine is useful for Good Night, Leaving Home, or Movie Time shortcuts.

1. Create a new routine from Automations.
2. Leave the If condition empty if your app version allows it.
3. Add the actions under Then.
4. Save the routine.
5. Run it from its tile on the SmartThings home screen or Automations list.

Run a new routine manually once before trusting an automatic trigger. That confirms every included device responds correctly.

Edit, delete, and expand routines

1. Open the Automations tab.
2. Tap the routine.
3. Use the three-dot menu or pencil icon.
4. Choose Edit.
5. Change triggers, conditions, or actions.
6. Save changes.
7. Use Delete from the same menu if you no longer need it.

Many newer devices connect to SmartThings over Wi-Fi or through a Samsung TV or compatible router, but Zigbee and Z-Wave devices still need a compatible hub. SmartThings routines cannot always call another routine directly, but a virtual switch can be used as a workaround for chaining actions.
