A Roku voice remote has a microphone button for voice search and commands, but it still has to pair with the Roku before those features work. Most pair automatically during setup; replacements may need manual pairing.
These steps apply to Roku TVs and Roku streaming devices used with a Roku remote that has a microphone icon button.
Does this affect you?
Use this if your Roku voice remote did not pair automatically, if you bought a replacement remote, or if you want to know what the microphone button can actually do.
Pair the Roku voice remote
- Install fresh batteries in the remote.
- Make sure the Roku TV or Roku device is powered on.
- Open the battery compartment and find the small pairing button if your model has one.
- Hold the pairing button for three to five seconds until the status light blinks rapidly.
- Wait up to 30 seconds for Roku to show a pairing confirmation.
- Test by pressing the microphone button and saying, “open Netflix.”
Some newer remotes pair without a visible button, but replacement remotes still follow the on-screen pairing flow from Roku settings.
Use Roku voice commands
Press and hold the microphone button while speaking, then release it when you finish.
- Search for content by saying a title, actor, genre, or show name.
- Open apps by saying commands such as “open Disney Plus” or “launch YouTube.”
- Control playback with commands like pause, rewind 30 seconds, or turn on captions.
- Adjust volume or mute on Roku TVs. On streaming players, this depends on TV control setup and HDMI-CEC support.
Short, direct phrases work better than long questions.
Fix voice remote problems
If the remote stops responding, replace the batteries first. Low batteries are one of the most common causes of button and voice failures.
If new batteries do not help, repeat pairing. Also check Settings > Remotes & devices > Remote for remote options and pairing controls.
Private listening and phone backup
Some Roku voice remotes support private listening through a headphone jack or compatible Bluetooth options. Check the remote and Settings > Remotes & devices for available audio features.
If the remote is missing or dead, the Roku mobile app can work as a temporary remote and includes voice search on many models while you arrange a replacement.
