How to Set Up the Fire TV Alexa Voice Remote

The Alexa Voice Remote usually pairs automatically during first Fire TV setup. If you bought a replacement remote, reset the Fire TV, or lost pairing, you can pair it manually with the Home button.

These steps apply to Fire TV devices and Fire TV Edition smart TVs that use an Alexa Voice Remote with a microphone or blue Alexa button.

Does this affect you?

Use this if the remote will not pair, if you are setting up a replacement, or if you want to know what Alexa commands actually work from the Fire TV remote.

Pair the remote

  1. Make sure the Fire TV is powered on.
  2. Install batteries in the remote.
  3. Point the remote toward the Fire TV device.
  4. Press and hold the Home button for about 10 seconds.
  5. Wait for the status light to blink and the on-screen pairing confirmation.

If it does not pair, go to Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Amazon Fire TV Remotes > Add New Remote, then hold Home again.

Use Alexa voice commands

Press and hold the microphone or Alexa button while speaking, then release it when you finish.

  • Search for movies, shows, actors, genres, or apps.
  • Open apps by saying commands such as open Prime Video or open YouTube.
  • Control playback with pause, fast forward 10 minutes, rewind, or turn on subtitles.
  • Ask general Alexa questions such as weather or time.
  • Control compatible smart home devices already set up in the Alexa app.

Speak at a normal pace and use short commands. A clear phrase works better than a long question when searching for content.

Hands-free and phone backup

Some Fire TV Cube and Fire TV Edition models support hands-free Alexa without pressing the remote. Check Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free if your model supports it.

Install the Amazon Fire TV app on iPhone or Android as a backup remote. It includes touch controls and a voice search button, which is useful while replacing or troubleshooting the physical remote.

If the remote stops working

Replace the batteries first, then repeat pairing. If the Fire TV itself is frozen, unplug the device from power for 30 seconds, let it restart, and try pairing again.
