Resetting a Roku can mean two very different things. A soft reset simply restarts the device and keeps apps, logins, and settings. A factory reset erases everything and returns the Roku to setup mode.
Most Roku problems only need a restart. Save factory reset for persistent issues that survive normal troubleshooting, or for when you are selling, returning, or giving away the device.

These steps apply to Roku TVs and Roku streaming devices, including Express, Streaming Stick, and Ultra. Use the soft reset first unless your goal is to wipe the Roku completely.
Soft reset or restart Roku
This fixes many glitches without deleting anything.
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Go to Settings > System.
- Open Power > System restart if your model shows Power. On some models, System restart appears directly under System.
- Select Restart and confirm.
- Wait 30 to 60 seconds for Roku to reboot.
Your channels, account link, app sign-ins, and preferences remain in place.
Factory reset from the menu
This wipes the Roku and should be used intentionally.
- Go to Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset.
- Choose Factory reset everything.
- Enter the confirmation code shown on the TV screen.
- Wait for the Roku to erase data and restart.
- Set it up again with Wi-Fi and a Roku account.
After a factory reset, you will need your Roku account email and password and you will need to sign back in to streaming apps individually.
Factory reset with the physical button
Use this if the remote is missing or unusable and you still need to wipe the device.
- Find the reset button or pinhole on the Roku device or Roku TV.
- Use a paperclip or similar tool if it is recessed.
- Press and hold for about 20 seconds.
- Release when the device light blinks rapidly or the reset begins.
- Wait for Roku to restart into setup.
The physical reset button performs the same factory reset as the menu method.
Before handing off a Roku
Always factory reset before selling or giving away a Roku. A soft restart leaves your Roku account and app logins in place.
If you can still open apps before resetting, sign out of premium services first, especially those with device activation limits. After a reset, check Settings > System > System update > Check now so the Roku is current.
