How to Reset Netflix on Your TV

TV and streaming troubleshooting category image

Resetting Netflix on a TV can mean a few things: force-closing the app, clearing cache, clearing data, or uninstalling and reinstalling it. Each level fixes a different kind of problem.

Use the lightest reset first. A full reinstall is useful when the app is corrupted, but it takes longer and usually requires signing back in.

Does this affect you?

Use this if Netflix freezes, loads slowly, shows stale errors, crashes, or behaves oddly on Samsung, LG, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Vizio SmartCast, or another TV platform.

Force-close and relaunch Netflix

This clears the active app session without touching your account.

  • On many smart TVs, hold Home to show open apps, highlight Netflix, and close it with the X, Options, or app-switching control.
  • On Roku, pressing Home exits Netflix; reopen it from the channel tile.
  • Wait about 10 seconds before reopening Netflix.

Try this first for a frozen screen or minor playback glitch.

Clear Netflix cache

Cache clearing removes temporary files without a full reinstall. The path depends on the device.

  • Samsung: Settings > Support > Device Care > Manage Storage, select Netflix, then choose Clear Cache. Clear Data is stronger and may sign you out.
  • LG: Settings > All Settings > General > Storage, select Netflix, then choose Clear Cache if available.
  • Fire TV: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Netflix > Clear Cache.
  • Roku: Roku does not offer per-app cache clearing. Press Home five times, Up once, Rewind twice, and Fast Forward twice to trigger a general cache-clearing restart.

Reopen Netflix afterward and sign in again only if the device asks.

Uninstall and reinstall Netflix

This is the most complete app reset.

  1. Highlight Netflix on the TV home screen or app list.
  2. Open the app options menu. On Roku, press Star. On Fire TV, press and hold Select. On Samsung and LG, press and hold Select/OK or open app options.
  3. Choose Remove, Delete, or Uninstall.
  4. Restart the TV or streaming device.
  5. Open the device app store, search for Netflix, and reinstall it.
  6. Sign in again. The TV sign-in page at netflix.com/tvsignin is often faster than typing a password with the remote.

Know what an app reset cannot fix

Netflix recommendations come from viewing history and profile data, not from the TV app. To change recommendations, edit Viewing Activity under Account > Profile & Parental Controls on netflix.com.

Profiles are also account-side. Edit or delete them on netflix.com, then let the TV sync. If Netflix still fails after reinstalling and the error appears on multiple devices, check Netflix service status or current outage reports before troubleshooting the TV further.
