Cloudy glasses, white film, and chalky residue inside the dishwasher usually point to hard water. The minerals build up slowly on the tub, racks, spray arms, and door gasket, then they redeposit on dishes during every cycle. The fix is to remove the existing scale and change the routine that lets it return.
These steps apply to dishwashers in hard-water areas regardless of brand, including Whirlpool, GE, Bosch, Samsung, LG, and similar models.

Hard water contains dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. When hot water evaporates or drains, some of those minerals stay behind. Over time they form the white crust on dishwasher parts and the cloudy coating on glassware.
Descale the dishwasher
A descaling cycle cleans the machine itself, not just the dishes you put inside it.
- Empty the dishwasher completely. Leave the racks in place, but remove dishes and utensils.
- Place a dishwasher-safe cup of plain white vinegar upright on the top rack, or use a dishwasher descaler made for mineral buildup. Do not add normal detergent during this cycle.
- Run a hot, full-length wash cycle. The vinegar or descaler will circulate through the tub and spray arms to loosen mineral deposits.
- When the cycle ends, wipe the door gasket, tub edges, and visible white residue with a damp cloth. A cleaning cycle loosens scale, but it may not rinse every patch away by itself.
- If water is still not reaching dishes well, inspect the spray arm holes and gently clear mineral plugs with a toothpick or thin wire.
- For thick, crusted deposits, repeat with a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner or descaler. Those products are stronger than plain vinegar and are made for serious scale.
Work carefully around any appliance that uses electricity and water. Do not remove panels, reach into wiring, or force parts open. If you need to do more than clean accessible surfaces and run a normal cycle, disconnect power and shut off water first.
Never mix vinegar with bleach or bleach-based dishwasher cleaner. That combination can create chlorine gas. Run the vinegar or descaler cycle by itself. Also let a hot cycle cool before putting your hands inside the tub because pooled water and metal surfaces can still burn.
Stop hard water stains from coming back
After the scale is gone, prevention matters more than scrubbing.
- Check whether your dishwasher has a water-hardness setting or built-in softener. If it does, set it to match your home water hardness from a test strip or utility report.
- Use rinse aid every cycle. Rinse aid is one of the most effective ways to reduce spotting and cloudy glass in hard-water homes.
- Choose a detergent designed for hard water or one with a built-in booster, especially if your area has high mineral levels.
- Run a maintenance cycle monthly in hard-water areas. In softer-water homes, every few months may be enough.
- If faucets, showerheads, kettles, and coffee makers also get heavy white scale, consider a whole-house water softener so each appliance is not treated separately.
To tell mineral film from permanent glass etching, soak one cloudy glass in white vinegar for a few minutes. If it clears, you are dealing with removable mineral deposits. If the cloudiness stays, the glass surface has likely been etched by heat and minerals; that damage cannot be cleaned away, only prevented on future glassware.
Thin, inexpensive glasses tend to etch sooner than heavier glass. If etching continues after you improve rinse aid and hard-water control, use a lower-temperature or glassware cycle for delicate items.
When the same white residue appears throughout the house, the dishwasher is only showing a larger water-quality issue. Addressing the hardness at the source will protect the dishwasher, coffee maker, faucets, and other water-using appliances together.
