A dishwasher that is flashing, beeping, frozen mid-cycle, or ignoring buttons often needs a reset before it needs a repair. Start with the front-panel reset, then move to a full power cycle if the controls do not respond.
These steps apply broadly to built-in dishwashers from Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Bosch, GE, Kenmore, Samsung, LG, and similar brands.

Dishwashers are controlled by small electronic boards. If the board gets stuck after a power blip, door-latch interruption, or failed cycle, it can look more serious than it is. A reset clears that confused state, much like restarting a frozen computer.
Cancel-and-drain reset
This is the quickest reset because it uses only the normal control panel.
- Press and hold Cancel, Drain, or Start/Cancel for three to five seconds. The label varies by brand, but many dishwashers respond by canceling the active cycle and starting a drain.
- Let the drain pump run for about 90 seconds, then leave the door closed and wait one full minute.
- Open and close the door once to re-seat the door latch signal.
- Choose a normal cycle and press Start. If the dishwasher begins filling and washing, the reset worked.
Power cycle at the breaker
If the buttons do nothing, cut power fully so the control board can discharge and restart.
- Find the breaker for the dishwasher. It may be labeled dishwasher, kitchen, disposal, or a shared kitchen circuit.
- Switch the breaker off and leave it off for a full five minutes. Do not rush this step; a quick off-on flip may not clear the board.
- Turn the breaker back on. If your dishwasher has a separate wall switch, under-sink switch, or toe-kick power switch, make sure that is on too.
- Wait about 30 seconds before pressing buttons because some models run a short startup check.
- Try a normal wash cycle.
This reset does not require opening the dishwasher or touching wiring. Do not reach behind the unit, under the toe kick, or into electrical areas. If the breaker trips again as soon as you restore power, leave it off and call an appliance technician or electrician because repeated resets can create a fire risk.
Check control lock before assuming it is frozen
Many dishwashers have a Control Lock, Child Lock, or Key Lock feature. It can make the panel look completely dead even though the appliance is working as designed. Look for a padlock icon and hold that button, or the labeled lock combination, for about three seconds. Then try the cycle again.
Some models use a brand-specific reset sequence instead of a simple Cancel hold. For example, certain Bosch dishwashers reset from the Start button, while some Samsung models use a Power and Start combination. If the general reset does nothing, search the model number on the manufacturer support site before moving deeper.
A reset clears a stuck electronic state. It cannot repair a jammed door latch, failed drain pump, bad float switch, or burnt control board. If the same error code returns immediately after a successful power cycle, troubleshoot that code rather than resetting over and over.
