An APK is an Android app installer file. The Play Store normally handles APKs invisibly, but sideloading lets you install one manually for a beta, internal app, region-limited app, or developer download.
These steps apply to Android 8 and later. Sideloading skips some Play Store protections, so source and permission checks matter.

Use this if you need an app that is not available through Google Play and want to install it without leaving the phone open to future unsafe installs.
Allow Installs from One Source
- Open the APK from Files, Chrome downloads, or the app that saved it.
- When Android blocks the install, tap Settings or Allow from this source.
- On the Install unknown apps screen, turn on permission for that specific app only.
- Go back to the APK file and open it again.
- Review the installer screen and requested permissions before confirming.
Modern Android grants unknown-install permission app by app, not as one global switch. That limits risk to the browser or file manager you approved.
Check the APK Before Installing
- Download only from the developer, an official company source, or a reputable repository.
- Compare the file name, app name, and file size with what the source describes.
- Pay attention to Google Play Protect warnings during install.
- After installation, open App permissions and check whether the requests make sense.
- Uninstall the app if a simple tool asks for unrelated access such as SMS, contacts, or microphone.
Turn the Permission Back Off
- Open Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps.
- Choose the browser, Files app, or source you allowed.
- Turn off Allow from this source.
This does not remove the app you installed. It only prevents that source from installing another APK without asking again.
APK Safety Notes
Play Protect Still Scans
Google Play Protect scans many apps even when they came from outside the Play Store. Check scan status in Play Store under your profile icon.
Prefer Known Repositories
APKMirror for mainstream apps and F-Droid for open-source apps are generally safer than random search results, though you should still verify what you download.
Some Apps Use Bundles
APKS, XAPK, or split APK sets may need a dedicated bundle installer. Android’s basic file opener may not install them correctly.
Avoid Casual Sideloading
If the app exists in the Play Store in your region, use that version unless you have a clear reason not to.
