A force restart makes a frozen Samsung Galaxy power cycle even when the touchscreen does not respond. It is safe, does not erase data, and should be the first move when the normal power menu will not appear.
These steps apply to Samsung Galaxy S, A, Z, and Note series phones running One UI.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if the phone is stuck, the screen will not respond to taps, or the normal Restart button cannot be reached.
Force Restart with Buttons
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down button together.
- Keep holding both buttons for 10 to 15 seconds.
- Do not release early if nothing happens at first.
- Wait for the screen to go black, a vibration, or the Samsung logo.
- Let the phone finish booting.
This works even when the screen is black or the phone ignores touch. Holding long enough is the trick.
If That Combination Does Not Respond
- Older phones with removable batteries may need the battery removed for about 10 seconds, then reinserted.
- A few older models may respond to Side or Power plus Volume Up.
- Older models with a physical Home button may use Power plus Home plus Volume Down.
- If there is no vibration, logo, or sign of life, charge the phone and check the cable before repeating restarts.
After the Restart
No Data Is Erased
Force restart is not a factory reset. Photos, apps, messages, accounts, and settings stay in place.
Use Safe Mode If It Freezes Again
If the phone restarts but freezes again quickly, boot into Safe Mode and remove recently installed apps or clear app cache.
Do Not Confuse Recovery Mode
Recovery Mode uses different buttons and includes advanced options such as wiping cache or factory reset. Force restart is the safer everyday step.
Let Hot Phones Cool
If the phone became hot before freezing, remove the case, unplug it, keep it away from direct sun, and let it cool before heavy use.
