Most modern Wi-Fi security cameras are designed for DIY installation. The smoothest approach is to set up the app and Wi-Fi connection first, test the view, and only then mount the camera.
These steps apply to battery-powered and plug-in Wi-Fi cameras from brands such as Ring, Blink, Wyze, and Arlo.

Set up the camera before mounting
Prove the camera works while it is still easy to reach.
- Download the manufacturer’s app, such as Ring, Blink, Wyze, or Arlo.
- Create an account or sign in.
- Insert the batteries or plug in the camera.
- Choose Add Device or Set Up New Device in the app.
- Scan the QR code on the camera, box, or manual if prompted.
- Connect the camera to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network unless your model supports another band.
- Open Live View near the intended mounting spot.
- Confirm the signal and video feed work before drilling.
Many outdoor cameras cannot use a 5 GHz-only network. If setup fails, create or choose a separate 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi name.
Choose the right camera spot
Placement affects both security value and connection reliability.
- Mount outdoor entry cameras about 7 to 9 feet high when possible.
- Aim low enough to capture faces, not only the tops of heads.
- Avoid pointing directly into sunrise, sunset, porch lights, or streetlights.
- Do not aim into a neighbor’s windows, yard, or private space.
- Check Live View from the final location before fastening the bracket.
For weak signal near the edge of the yard or driveway, add a mesh point or Wi-Fi extender between the router and camera instead of hoping the connection remains stable.
Mount and adjust the camera
- Hold the mounting bracket in place.
- Use the included template if one came in the box.
- Mark screw holes with a pencil.
- Drill pilot holes slightly smaller than the screws.
- Use wall anchors for drywall, brick, masonry, or other non-wood surfaces.
- Screw the bracket securely into place.
- Attach the camera.
- Open Live View again and fine-tune the angle.
After mounting, set motion zones in the app so the camera watches the driveway, porch, or walkway instead of every passing car. Some cities also offer voluntary camera registration programs; check your local police department website if you want footage requests to move faster after an incident.
