
When a Honeywell thermostat will not cool, do not assume the thermostat is bad right away. Many cooling problems come from mode settings, schedules, compressor delay, airflow restrictions, or the outdoor AC unit.
These steps apply to Honeywell Home T-series thermostats such as T4, T5, T6, T9, and T10, plus many older Honeywell RTH-series models.

Check mode, temperature, and schedule settings
This section fixes many no-cooling complaints without tools.
- Confirm the thermostat is set to Cool, not Heat, Auto, or Off.
- Set the target temperature at least 3 degrees below the current room temperature.
- Look for Hold, Permanent Hold, or a schedule override in the Honeywell Home app or on the thermostat.
- Clear the hold if you want the thermostat to follow the current manual setting.
- After changing the setting, wait a full 5 minutes.
Many air conditioners have a compressor-protection delay. The thermostat may be calling for cooling correctly even though the outdoor unit does not start immediately.
Check the air filter and outdoor unit
Restricted airflow and outdoor-unit problems can make it look like the thermostat is not doing its job.
- Check the HVAC air filter and replace it if it looks gray, dusty, or clogged.
- Go outside and inspect the condenser unit.
- Confirm the condenser fan is running and warm air is blowing out of the top.
- Clear leaves, plants, grass clippings, or debris around the unit.
- Look at the copper refrigerant lines for visible ice or frost.
- If you see ice, turn cooling off and let the system thaw for several hours.
Running a frozen system can damage the compressor. If the outdoor unit does not run while the thermostat says cooling is active, check for a tripped AC breaker or outdoor disconnect before blaming the thermostat.
Check the thermostat wiring configuration
Use this only after settings and basic HVAC checks look correct.
- Open the thermostat or Honeywell Home app installer settings if available.
- Look for the active wire terminals.
- Focus on the Y terminal, which sends the cooling call.
- If the thermostat was recently installed, confirm the Y wire is not loose or in the wrong terminal.
- For two-stage cooling, confirm Y1 and Y2 are connected and configured as intended.
- Confirm the selected system type matches your HVAC system, such as conventional versus heat pump and single-stage versus multi-stage.
Before removing the thermostat faceplate or touching wire terminals, turn off power to the air conditioning system at the outdoor disconnect or the HVAC breaker. Take a clear photo of the wiring before moving anything.
Stop if wires are loose, corroded, unlabeled, or confusing. Incorrect thermostat wiring can damage the thermostat or the HVAC control board, so an HVAC technician is the right next step.
When the thermostat is not the real fix
If the outdoor unit runs and air comes from the vents but the air is barely cool, the indoor evaporator coil may be dirty or iced. A gradually worsening system that runs constantly can also point to low refrigerant from a leak.
Refrigerant leaks, dirty coils inside the air handler, burning smells, loud mechanical noises, and repeat ice buildup are professional HVAC problems. The thermostat can request cooling, but it cannot repair the AC system itself.
