A Nest Hub can stop responding because its software is stuck, its Wi-Fi connection is broken, the microphone is muted, or the display has a hardware fault. Start with a restart because it solves many frozen-screen problems.
These steps apply to Google Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max, and Nest Hub 2nd gen devices managed in the Google Home app.
Does this affect you?
Use this if Hey Google gets no response, the touchscreen is frozen, the display is blank, or the screen shows a Wi-Fi or no-internet message. Like any small computer, the Hub sometimes needs a clean reboot.
Restart the Nest Hub
This is the fastest fix for a frozen screen, unresponsive Assistant, or stuck display.
- Unplug the power adapter from the wall or from the back of the Nest Hub.
- Wait about 10 seconds.
- Plug it back in.
- Give the Hub 1 to 2 minutes to boot.
- Wait for the Google logo and normal home screen.
- Test it by saying, Hey Google, what time is it?
If the Hub starts working again after a restart, no further reset is needed.
Fix Wi-Fi connection issues
Use this if the display shows a disconnected Wi-Fi icon or a message asking you to check the connection.
- Confirm another phone or laptop works on the same home Wi-Fi.
- If the whole network is down, unplug the router for one minute, plug it back in, and wait 2 to 3 minutes.
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap the Nest Hub tile and then the gear icon.
- Check Wi-Fi status in device settings.
- If disconnected, tap Forget Network and connect it again.
- If 5 GHz keeps dropping, try connecting to the 2.4 GHz network name.
Nest Hub models can use 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, but 2.4 GHz often reaches farther and behaves better through walls.
Check microphone mute and account links
If the screen works but voice commands do not, inspect the physical microphone switch on the Hub. When the mic is muted, Hey Google will not work, and the display usually shows an orange indicator.
If the Hub responds to basic questions but cannot find your lights, plugs, thermostat, or cameras, check the Google Home app account. Make sure the Hub is in the same Google home and account as the devices you are trying to control.
Factory reset as a last resort
A factory reset erases the Hub’s local setup and requires adding it again.
- Swipe down from the top of the Nest Hub display.
- Tap the gear icon for Settings.
- Open Device Information.
- Choose Factory Reset and confirm.
- If the touchscreen is unusable, hold the volume up and volume down buttons together for about 10 seconds on many Nest Hub models.
- Follow the on-screen reset prompt, then set it up again in the Google Home app.
Button combinations vary slightly by generation, so check Google’s model-specific reset instructions if the volume-button method does not bring up the confirmation.
If multiple Google Assistant devices stop responding at once and Wi-Fi is fine, the cause may be a temporary Google service issue. If the display stays black even with confirmed power and a factory reset cannot start, contact Google Nest support with purchase details for warranty options.
