Google Fiber Down? How to Check It and Get Back Online

Google Fiber Jack and router outage lights

Google Fiber uses a Fiber Jack or ONT plus a router. When service drops, the issue may be a Google Fiber outage, a fiber signal problem, a router problem, or the Ethernet link between them.

Does this affect you?

Use this if Google Fiber internet is down, the Fiber Jack or router lights look wrong, or nothing loads through a Google Fiber or third-party router.

Check for an outage

Do this from mobile data.

  1. Open the Google Fiber app and look for a service status banner.
  2. Check Google Fiber help or status pages for city or area notices.
  3. Look for email or text about scheduled maintenance.
  4. Contact Google Fiber support through app or chat if nothing is listed; they can check signal to the Fiber Jack.

Power cycle Fiber Jack and router

Restart in the right order.

  1. Locate the Fiber Jack and router.
  2. Unplug the router first, then the Fiber Jack.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the Fiber Jack back in and wait about 2 minutes for a steady light.
  5. Plug the router back in and wait 1 to 2 minutes.
  6. Check for a steady internet/connection state.

Check Fiber Jack light and cabling

The Fiber Jack light tells you whether fiber service reaches the home.

  1. A steady blue or white light usually means the fiber link is healthy.
  2. Amber, red, or off usually points to incoming fiber signal trouble.
  3. If the Fiber Jack looks healthy, reseat or replace the Ethernet cable to the router.
  4. For third-party routers, make sure WAN/internet is set to automatic DHCP.
  5. Report persistent red/off Fiber Jack lights through Google Fiber support.

More control

Outage maps can lag

Reporting through the app creates a record and can help Google Fiber confirm a building or block issue faster.

Ask about credits for long outages

For outages lasting several hours, ask support whether account credit applies and note the dates.

Use hotspot only for essentials

Mobile hotspot can cover light work while waiting, but it will not replace fiber speed or capacity.
