Your Google recovery email is the backup address used for account recovery and security alerts. It is separate from your main sign-in address, and it should be an inbox you can access independently.
Does this affect you?
Use this for any personal Google Account, including Gmail accounts and Google Accounts that use a non-Gmail email address.
You are currently signed in
This is the simple, proactive update.
- Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in.
- Open Security from the left menu.
- Under How you sign in to Google, choose Recovery email.
- Re-enter your password if Google asks.
- Select Edit, enter the new recovery email address, and continue.
- Open the verification code Google sends to that new email.
- Enter the code to confirm the change.
You are locked out and the old recovery email no longer works
Use Google recovery first, then update the email once access returns.
- Go to g.co/recover.
- Enter the Google Account you are trying to recover.
- When the old recovery email is unavailable, choose another method such as recovery phone, backup code, trusted device, or account questions.
- Answer as accurately as possible, including old passwords and approximate account details.
- After regaining access, immediately follow the signed-in steps above to add a working recovery email.
More control
Check it before you need it
Most people notice an outdated recovery email only during a lockout. Review it once a year and anytime you change jobs, close an inbox, or switch primary email providers.
Use an independent address
Do not set the recovery email to an address that depends on the same Google Account. Choose an inbox you can reach even if this Google Account is locked.
Add a recovery phone too
A recovery phone gives Google a second path that does not depend on email. Keep both phone and recovery email current under Security.
