If you know your Gmail address but cannot remember the password, check saved passwords first. Many people do not need a reset because the password is already stored in their browser or phone.

Use this for a Google Account used with Gmail when the account is not obviously hacked or suspended and you simply cannot remember the password.
Check if it is already saved somewhere
This can avoid a reset entirely.
- Open the browser or device where you normally sign in.
- Check the saved-password manager, such as Google Password Manager in Chrome, iCloud Passwords on Apple devices, or saved passwords in Edge.
- Search for google.com or gmail.
- Reveal the saved password after entering your device passcode if required.
- Try that password on the Gmail sign-in page.
Reset it through Google’s forgot-password flow
Use this if no saved password works.
- Enter your Gmail address on the sign-in screen.
- Choose Forgot password on the password screen.
- When Google asks for the last password you remember, enter your best real guess. Even an older password can help verify ownership.
- Choose a recovery phone or recovery email if Google offers one.
- Enter the verification code when it arrives.
- Create a new password that is long, unique, and not used on other sites.
- Sign in and update saved passwords on your devices.
More control
Outdated recovery details require a longer path
If the recovery phone or email is no longer available, use Google’s full account recovery process. It may ask more identity questions and may take longer.
Save the new password
When your browser or phone offers to save the new password, accept it if you trust the device. A password manager prevents the same lockout from repeating.
Update recovery and 2-Step Verification
After signing in, open myaccount.google.com > Security. Turn on 2-Step Verification and update Ways we can verify it is you with a current recovery phone and email.
