How to Use Gemini Live for Natural Voice Conversations

Gemini Live is the spoken conversation mode in the Gemini app. Instead of typing a question and waiting for one written response, you can talk back and forth, interrupt, change direction, and, where available, share your camera or screen.

Does this affect you?

Use this for the Gemini app on Android or iPhone. Voice-only Gemini Live works for many free users, while model quality and some limits depend on plan and region.

Start a basic Gemini Live conversation

No wake word is needed after the Live session begins.

  1. Open the Gemini app.
  2. Install or update it from Google Play or the App Store if needed.
  3. Tap the Live icon near the text input area. It may look like a waveform or say Live.
  4. Speak normally.
  5. Talk over Gemini if you need to interrupt; it should stop and listen.
  6. Tap X or the end-call button to finish.

On Android, Gemini Live may run as an overlay while you use other apps, depending on device and app support.

Share your camera or screen during Live

This lets Gemini respond to what it can see, not just what it hears.

  1. Start a Gemini Live conversation.
  2. Tap the camera icon to share the camera view.
  3. Point the camera at the object, page, math problem, appliance, or other item you want help with.
  4. Ask your question out loud.
  5. Use the screen-share icon if you want Gemini to discuss what is on your phone display instead of the camera.

More control

Update the app if icons are missing

Google has expanded camera and screen sharing over time. If the controls are not visible, update Gemini and check whether the feature is available for your account and region.

Language support varies

Gemini Live supports multiple languages, but quality and availability differ. Make sure your phone and Gemini language settings match what you are speaking.

Video uses more battery and data

Camera or screen sharing drains more battery and can use more mobile data than voice-only chat. Use Wi-Fi for longer sessions when possible.

It can still be wrong

Gemini may misidentify objects, misread text, or make factual mistakes, especially in poor lighting or unusual situations. Treat answers as a starting point.
