Garbage Disposal Making a Loud Noise? What It Means and How to Fix It

A disposal that suddenly grinds, rattles, or hums louder than normal usually has a hard object bouncing in the chamber or a loose mount vibrating against the sink and pipes.

This applies to standard under-sink garbage disposals from InSinkErator, Waste King, GE, KitchenAid, Moen, and similar brands.

Does this affect you?

Use this if the disposal still runs but sounds harsher, louder, or more metallic than it used to.

Safety first

  • Turn off the wall switch, then unplug the disposal or switch off its breaker.
  • Never put your hand inside the disposal.
  • Use a flashlight plus tongs or needle-nose pliers to remove objects.
  • Try the wall switch after cutting power to confirm it cannot start.
  • Do not force tools deep into the chamber where you cannot see them.

Check for a stuck object

  1. With power off, shine a flashlight into the drain opening.
  2. Look for a bottle cap, utensil, fruit pit, glass shard, or other hard object.
  3. Remove visible objects with tongs or pliers.
  4. If nothing is visible, insert the disposal hex wrench into the bottom center hex hole.
  5. Turn the wrench back and forth to free the impeller plate.
  6. Restore power and test briefly with cold water running.

Check mounting and pipe vibration

  • With power off, gently wiggle the disposal where it meets the sink flange.
  • Tighten the mounting ring or screws according to the manual if loose.
  • Check the drainpipe and dishwasher hose for contact with the cabinet or other pipes.
  • Move or secure pipes that amplify normal vibration.
  • Listen again to decide whether the sound is inside the chamber or from the mounting.

If the chamber is clear but grinding remains, the internal grind ring may be worn or warped. A loud hum from a disposal that still spins can also point to worn motor bearings. Because internal disposal rebuilds rarely make financial sense, replacement is often more practical than repair on an older unit.
