A garbage disposal does not need much maintenance, but it does need the right routine: cold water, sensible food scraps, and occasional cleaning before odor, jams, or slow drains start.
This applies to standard household disposals from InSinkErator, Waste King, Moen, and similar under-sink units.

Use this if you want the disposal to last longer and avoid clogs, smell, jams, and motor overloads.
Safety first
- Never put your hand or fingers into the disposal, even when it is off.
- Turn off the wall switch and unplug the unit or switch off the breaker before working near the drain.
- Use long tongs or pliers to remove visible objects.
- Use the disposal hex wrench from underneath to free jams instead of using a screwdriver or knife from above.
- Keep the switch off any time you are inspecting the chamber.
Weekly routine
- Run cold water while the disposal runs and for about 15 seconds after turning it off.
- Use cold water instead of hot so grease stays firmer and flushes away instead of coating pipes.
- Once a week, grind a handful of ice cubes to scrape residue from the chamber.
- Follow with small citrus peels for fresher smell.
- Do not leave scraps sitting in the disposal overnight.
Deep clean for smell or slow drainage
- Turn the disposal off.
- Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into the drain.
- Add 1 cup white vinegar.
- Let it fizz for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Flush with hot water for about 30 seconds.
- For lingering odor, add dish soap and water, run briefly with cold water, then rinse.
Keep grease, large amounts of oil, celery, corn husks, coffee grounds, pasta, rice, eggshell piles, fruit pits, and bones out of the disposal. These either wrap, compact, expand, clog, or damage the grinding parts.
A hum with no grinding, a burning smell, or food taking longer than usual to clear are early warning signs. Deal with those symptoms before repeatedly forcing the motor.
