A Fire TV Stick remote is not only a simple line-of-sight remote. It pairs over Bluetooth, so it has to link to your specific Fire TV device before the buttons will work.
This guide applies to standard Fire TV Stick remotes, Alexa Voice Remotes, and replacement remotes purchased separately. It covers first-time pairing, lost pairing after a battery change, and remotes that refuse to show up during setup.

Use these steps if the Fire TV setup screen is waiting for a remote, a replacement remote will not connect, or your existing remote lights up but the Fire TV Stick ignores it. Bluetooth pairing can fail because of weak batteries, a stuck Fire TV connection, or the remote trying to pair with a nearby device.
Pair with the Home button
The Home-button method is the standard way to pair most Fire TV remotes.
- Make sure the Fire TV Stick is connected to HDMI and powered from its adapter.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the Fire TV Stick.
- Hold the Home button on the remote for about 10 seconds.
- Watch for the remote light to blink, then wait up to 30 seconds for pairing to finish.
- When the Fire TV screen responds or displays a confirmation, test the arrow buttons and Select button.
Hold the button long enough. A quick press only sends a command; it does not start pairing.
Replace the batteries
Weak batteries are one of the easiest causes to miss. A remote can still flash a light while not having enough power to pair reliably.
- Remove both batteries from the remote.
- Insert two fresh AAA batteries, matching the plus and minus markings inside the compartment.
- Try batteries from a different package if you are unsure about the first pair.
- Repeat the Home-button pairing process for about 10 seconds.
Avoid mixing an old battery with a new one. Fire TV remotes can behave unpredictably when the pair is uneven.
Restart the Fire TV Stick and re-pair
If the remote worked before but suddenly stopped responding, restart the Fire TV side of the Bluetooth connection.
- Unplug the Fire TV Stick from power. Unplugging only HDMI is not enough.
- Wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in and let it boot fully.
- Press any button on the remote. If nothing happens, hold Home for 10 seconds.
- If that fails, unplug the Fire TV Stick again. Hold Home on the remote while plugging the stick back in, and keep holding Home for the first 10 seconds after power returns.
Pairing during startup can work when normal pairing after boot does not, because the Fire TV is actively looking for a controller early in the startup process.
Use the phone app or isolate nearby devices
If you are stuck without a working physical remote, install the Amazon Fire TV app on an iPhone or Android phone. It controls the Fire TV over your home Wi-Fi and can help you navigate settings while you troubleshoot the actual remote.
Also check the room. If you have more than one Fire TV Stick nearby, unplug the other one while pairing. Replacement remotes are not pre-paired to your device, and a remote can sometimes connect to the wrong Fire TV if several are active at once.
If a second known-working remote also cannot pair with the same Fire TV Stick, the remote may not be the problem. The Fire TV Stick’s Bluetooth hardware or system software may be failing, and warranty support or replacement may be the next practical step.
