ESPN+ problems have a special way of appearing right when the game starts. The stream may spin on a loading screen, fail with an error, or open the event page without actually playing.
These steps apply to the ESPN app with an ESPN+ subscription on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Samsung and LG smart TVs, Android TV, and similar streaming devices. ESPN+ is also branded inside ESPN’s newer subscription lineup, but the troubleshooting path is the same: restart the app, check the connection, then re-check account access.
Does this affect you?
This guide is for cases where the ESPN app opens but ESPN+ video will not start, live sports fail to load, or the app asks you to sign in again even though your subscription is active. Most of these failures come from a stuck app session, unstable internet, outdated app data, or an account authorization issue.
Restart the app and streaming device
Start here if you are short on time. A clean restart fixes many ESPN+ playback failures without changing any settings.
- Press Home on your remote to leave the ESPN app.
- Fully close the app if your device allows it. On Fire TV, open the recent apps/app management view and stop ESPN. On Roku, backing out and reopening is often enough.
- Unplug the streaming device or smart TV from power for 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in, wait for the home screen, reopen ESPN, and select the event again.
If the stream starts after this, the problem was likely a stale app session or temporary memory issue.
Check the internet connection
Live sports are less forgiving than on-demand shows. A short Wi-Fi drop or overloaded home network can stop the event before it ever starts.
- Open your device’s network settings and confirm it is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
- If other apps are also slow or buffering, restart the router by unplugging it for one full minute, then waiting for it to reconnect.
- Use Ethernet if your streaming device supports it. Wired connections are much steadier for live events.
- Pause large downloads, extra 4K streams, cloud backups, or video calls while the game is on.
- If Wi-Fi is weak near the TV, move the router closer, reduce obstructions, or use a stronger access point.
Sign out, update, or reinstall ESPN
Use these steps when ESPN+ loads but says you are not authorized, repeatedly fails in the same place, or works on one device but not another.
- In the ESPN app, open Settings or your profile area and choose Sign Out or Log Out.
- Sign back in with the account that owns the ESPN+ subscription.
- Check the device app store for an ESPN update and install it if available.
- If the problem continues, uninstall ESPN, restart the device, reinstall the app, and sign in again.
On Fire TV, ESPN can be removed from Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications. On Roku, highlight the channel, press the Star button, and choose Remove channel. Reinstall from the device’s app store afterward.
Check account limits, blackouts, and outages
If the basic fixes do not get you into the game, a few service-side rules may be involved.
- ESPN+ limits simultaneous streaming on the same account. If someone is already watching on another TV, phone, or computer, stop one stream and try again.
- Some live events are blocked in certain regions because of blackout rules. If the app displays a blackout message, troubleshooting will not bypass it.
- Search for current ESPN app outage reports or check a service like Downdetector. Big events can overload streaming servers.
- If only one event fails while other ESPN videos play, the event feed itself may be the issue.
Once the event plays, avoid switching apps repeatedly during a live stream. On some devices that can force ESPN to reload the authorization session and bring the problem back.
